Creating legitimate melds—which can be runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) or sets (three or four cards of the same rank)—is the goal. A draw pile is created from thteen pattye remaining cards after each player is dealt a predetermined number of cards, typically ten. To start the game, the top card in the draw pile is turned face up to form a discard pile. By strategically discarding cards that could be helpful to their opponents and forming melds to strengthen their hands, players alternately draw from the draw pile and the discard pile.
